Methodology

How the estimates were built: data sources, modelling approach and validation steps.

Research approach

A market size is a claim about the world, and a claim is only as good as the route to it. Every study is built upward from units and prices — what is actually produced, sold or performed, at what it actually changes hands for — rather than from a headline figure divided downwards. Disclosed company revenue is then used to check that build, not to produce it.

The four stages

The same sequence runs behind every published study, whatever the industry. The order matters as much as the steps: the segment axes are fixed before any number is collected, so the model is never reshaped to fit whatever data happens to turn up.

What the build rests on, and what checks it

The two are not interchangeable. The left column produces the number; the right column tests it. When the check disagrees with the build, the answer is to find which bottom-up assumption is wrong — a unit count, a price, a take-up rate — not to split the difference between them.

The bottom-up build rests on
  • Volume actually transacted — units produced, installed, dispensed or procedures performed, counted at the level each is genuinely recorded
  • Realised pricing by tier and channel, rather than one blended average applied across the whole market
  • Take-up and frequency: how much of the addressable base buys, and how often it repeats
The build is checked against
  • Disclosed revenue of the companies serving the market, where filings separate it far enough to be usable
  • Buyer-side spending totals — capital budgets, procurement lines, or the output of the end market the product is bought against
  • Trade and customs flows, where the product crosses borders in a separately recorded form

Reconciliation sequence

Data sources

Published data establishes what happened. Only the people transacting in a market can say why, and what is about to change — so the two are collected separately and weighted differently.

Primary — who is interviewed
  • Commercial and product leadership at the companies that supply the market
  • Procurement and specification leads at the organisations that buy it
  • Distributors, integrators and channel partners, where the market is served indirectly
  • Regulatory and standards specialists, where approval governs what can be sold at all
Secondary — what is read
  • Company filings, annual reports and investor disclosure
  • Government statistics, customs records and regulatory registers
  • Trade association output and standards-body publications
  • Technical and peer-reviewed literature, where the market rests on a clinical or engineering claim
Primary research design, this report

Primary interviews focus on commercial and technical roles at formulators and generic manufacturers in China and India, procurement and agronomy staff at large cotton and fruit-export growing operations in Brazil, Egypt and Australia, and regulatory affairs contacts who track registration status across the Asia Pacific, Latin American and African markets where the active ingredient is actually approved for use. Distributor and agro-dealer input is weighted toward the retail channels smallholder growers rely on in South and Southeast Asia and East Africa, since that channel carries the largest share of end-market volume. Sampling emphasises the growing regions where chlorfluazuron is registered rather than markets, such as the European Union, where it is not.

Secondary sources, this report

Desk research draws on national pesticide registration registers, including the Chinese Institute for the Control of Agrochemicals (ICAMA) product list, India's Central Insecticides Board and Registration Committee database, and the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority public register, each of which lists chlorfluazuron's approved crops and formulations by country. Codex Alimentarius and national maximum residue limit schedules were checked to confirm which export markets can legally receive treated produce. Global trade under the HS 3808.91 insecticide customs code was used to cross-check shipment patterns implied by the volume build, alongside the crop-protection segment disclosures of the multinational suppliers named in this report.

Desk research runs across proprietary research databases including Factiva, OneSource and Hoovers alongside the public sources above. Modelling and statistical validation are run in SAS and SPSS.

Forecasting

The forecast is not a growth rate applied to a base year. It is built from the drivers that are expected to change, each one stated so a reader can disagree with it.

Forecast approach, this report

The forecast carries forward the volume build using expected changes in planted area and spray frequency for cotton, vegetables and fruit in the registered growing regions, adjusted for the gradual substitution of chlorfluazuron by newer resistance-management rotations on cotton and its increasing adoption on export fruit crops. Pricing is held broadly flat in real terms, reflecting a mature, largely generic technical-grade supply base, with a premium sustained for higher-purity material sold into residue-sensitive export channels. The forecast normalises for the demand disruption of 2020 and 2021, treating those two years as temporarily depressed rather than as a new baseline. It holds only if registration status in today's approved markets does not tighten further during the forecast period.

Triangulation and validation

No figure enters a report on the strength of one source. Where the two sizing routes disagree the difference is not averaged away — the assumption causing it is isolated, tested against a third independent measure, and either corrected or carried forward as a stated limitation. Historical years are back-tested against the growth actually recorded before any forecast is allowed to run forward from them.

Validation, this report

Outputs were back-tested against recorded historical growth in the cotton and fruit-export insecticide categories over the 2020-2024 period to confirm the implied volume and price trajectory was not overstated relative to observed crop-protection spending. Segment-level shifts, particularly the narrowing lead of cotton and the acceleration of fruit applications, were reviewed against agronomists' expectations for resistance-management adoption. Sensitivities were run on planted-area growth in the largest cotton markets and on the pace of fruit-sector adoption, since those two inputs move the forecast total more than any pricing assumption tested.

Confidence and limitations

Where an estimate is firm and where it is not is stated rather than left to be inferred from the precision of the number.

Confidence framing, this report

Confidence is firmer for the multinational-supplier segment of this market, where crop-protection revenue disclosures give a check on the volume build, and for the cotton application, where historical spray patterns are well documented. It is thinner for smallholder-channel volumes in South Asia and East Africa, where reporting is inconsistent and much of the trade moves through informal distributor networks that do not publish figures. A material regulatory change in any of the few large registered markets, or a faster-than-expected shift away from cotton toward Bt-resistant varieties, would be the most likely reason to revise this estimate.
