Methodology

How the estimates were built: data sources, modelling approach and validation steps.

Research approach

A market size is a claim about the world, and a claim is only as good as the route to it. Every study is built upward from units and prices — what is actually produced, sold or performed, at what it actually changes hands for — rather than from a headline figure divided downwards. Disclosed company revenue is then used to check that build, not to produce it.

Market size estimation, this report

The estimate is built upward from cylinder unit volumes: OEM fitment counts reported by commercial and passenger vehicle programs, retrofit kit installations tracked through conversion-center throughput, and industrial cascade unit shipments for station storage. Each volume line is priced at the realized average selling price for its construction type, since a Type IV carbon fibre cylinder and a Type I steel cylinder carry materially different price points even at the same water capacity. The resulting build is checked against revenue disclosed by Hexagon Agility, Worthington Industries, Luxfer Group and other listed suppliers in their segment reporting. Where the bottom-up total diverged from disclosed revenue, the correction was made to the unit-price or fitment-rate assumption driving the gap, not by averaging the two figures together.

The four stages

The same sequence runs behind every published study, whatever the industry. The order matters as much as the steps: the segment axes are fixed before any number is collected, so the model is never reshaped to fit whatever data happens to turn up.

What the build rests on, and what checks it

The two are not interchangeable. The left column produces the number; the right column tests it. When the check disagrees with the build, the answer is to find which bottom-up assumption is wrong — a unit count, a price, a take-up rate — not to split the difference between them.

The bottom-up build rests on
  • Volume actually transacted — units produced, installed, dispensed or procedures performed, counted at the level each is genuinely recorded
  • Realised pricing by tier and channel, rather than one blended average applied across the whole market
  • Take-up and frequency: how much of the addressable base buys, and how often it repeats
The build is checked against
  • Disclosed revenue of the companies serving the market, where filings separate it far enough to be usable
  • Buyer-side spending totals — capital budgets, procurement lines, or the output of the end market the product is bought against
  • Trade and customs flows, where the product crosses borders in a separately recorded form

Data sources

Published data establishes what happened. Only the people transacting in a market can say why, and what is about to change — so the two are collected separately and weighted differently.

Primary — who is interviewed
  • Commercial and product leadership at the companies that supply the market
  • Procurement and specification leads at the organisations that buy it
  • Distributors, integrators and channel partners, where the market is served indirectly
  • Regulatory and standards specialists, where approval governs what can be sold at all
Secondary — what is read
  • Company filings, annual reports and investor disclosure
  • Government statistics, customs records and regulatory registers
  • Trade association output and standards-body publications
  • Technical and peer-reviewed literature, where the market rests on a clinical or engineering claim
Primary research design, this report

Interviews target the roles that actually set cylinder specification and purchase timing: fleet procurement managers at bus and taxi operators, OEM powertrain and platform engineers deciding whether a model gets a factory CNG variant, conversion-center owners who install retrofit kits, and the station operators and regulators who set fill-pressure and certification standards. Sampling weights toward India, China, Argentina, Brazil, Iran and Egypt, the geographies where CNG vehicle penetration and cylinder replacement cycles are highest, with a smaller sample in North America and Europe to capture transit-fleet and industrial-storage buyers where CNG vehicle share is lower but cylinder specification requirements differ.

Secondary sources, this report

Desk research draws on national vehicle registration and conversion-kit certification registers in India, Pakistan and Argentina, where CNG retrofit approval is centrally logged; the ANP fuel-distribution database in Brazil; customs trade data filed under the HS code covering compressed-gas cylinders; and cylinder testing and re-qualification standards published by ISO and regional pressure-vessel authorities that set the replacement cycle assumption. Supplier 10-K and annual-report segment disclosures from Worthington Industries, Luxfer Group and Hexagon Agility supply the top-down revenue check, and natural-gas retail pricing series from national energy ministries anchor the fuel-cost-advantage assumption behind the demand forecast.

Desk research runs across proprietary research databases including Factiva, OneSource and Hoovers alongside the public sources above. Modelling and statistical validation are run in SAS and SPSS.

Forecasting

The forecast is not a growth rate applied to a base year. It is built from the drivers that are expected to change, each one stated so a reader can disagree with it.

Forecast approach, this report

The forecast carries forward the fitment-rate and retrofit-cycle assumptions from the sizing build, adjusted for the pace of factory CNG model additions already announced by OEMs and the station-network expansion plans disclosed by national gas utilities. Pricing assumes a gradual mix shift toward Type III and Type IV composite cylinders as their price premium over steel narrows, not a sudden step change. The one anomaly normalised for is Iran's cylinder replacement backlog, which briefly depressed disclosed volumes in the historical period; that year is treated as an outlier, not a new baseline. The forecast holds only if a major CNG market does not reverse its fuel-price subsidy.

Triangulation and validation

No figure enters a report on the strength of one source. Where the two sizing routes disagree the difference is not averaged away — the assumption causing it is isolated, tested against a third independent measure, and either corrected or carried forward as a stated limitation. Historical years are back-tested against the growth actually recorded before any forecast is allowed to run forward from them.

Validation, this report

Back-testing compared the bottom-up build's implied 2020-2024 growth against recorded vehicle registration and cylinder re-qualification volumes in India, Argentina and Egypt, the three markets with the most complete historical series. Segment shifts, particularly the move from steel toward composite cylinders, were reviewed against manufacturers' own capacity-expansion announcements to confirm the pace is supply-constrained, not assumption-driven. Sensitivities were run on the natural-gas-to-gasoline price spread and on the OEM factory-fit adoption rate, the two inputs most likely to move the forecast, and the published base case sits inside the range both sensitivities produced.

Confidence and limitations

Where an estimate is firm and where it is not is stated rather than left to be inferred from the precision of the number.

Confidence framing, this report

Confidence is firmest in the commercial vehicle and OEM fitment segments in India and China, where registration and certification data are current and complete. It is thinner in the Middle East and Africa split, where Iran's disclosure is limited and Egypt's conversion-program data lags by more than a year, and in the industrial and power-generation application, which has no dedicated registry and rests on adjacent gas-storage analogues. A structural risk that would force a revision is a sudden shift in national fuel subsidies, which has repriced CNG's cost advantage abruptly in past cycles.
