Methodology

How the estimates were built: data sources, modelling approach and validation steps.

Research approach

A market size is a claim about the world, and a claim is only as good as the route to it. Every study is built upward from units and prices — what is actually produced, sold or performed, at what it actually changes hands for — rather than from a headline figure divided downwards. Disclosed company revenue is then used to check that build, not to produce it.

Market size estimation, this report

The estimate is built upward from conveyor unit and system shipment volumes, tracked in linear meters of installed belt, roller and slat conveyor and in discrete system counts for turnkey lines, combined with average realized price per meter or per system across type and load capacity tiers. Volumes are anchored to HS code 8428 material handling equipment trade and shipment data, split by destination region and end-use category. The resulting bottom-up figure is then checked against the material handling segment revenue disclosed by publicly listed suppliers including Daifuku, Siemens, TGW Logistics Group and KION Group, which owns Dematic. Where the two disagree, the correction is made to the underlying unit or price assumption in the bottom-up build, not by averaging in the disclosed figure as a second estimate.

The four stages

The same sequence runs behind every published study, whatever the industry. The order matters as much as the steps: the segment axes are fixed before any number is collected, so the model is never reshaped to fit whatever data happens to turn up.

What the build rests on, and what checks it

The two are not interchangeable. The left column produces the number; the right column tests it. When the check disagrees with the build, the answer is to find which bottom-up assumption is wrong — a unit count, a price, a take-up rate — not to split the difference between them.

The bottom-up build rests on
  • Volume actually transacted — units produced, installed, dispensed or procedures performed, counted at the level each is genuinely recorded
  • Realised pricing by tier and channel, rather than one blended average applied across the whole market
  • Take-up and frequency: how much of the addressable base buys, and how often it repeats
The build is checked against
  • Disclosed revenue of the companies serving the market, where filings separate it far enough to be usable
  • Buyer-side spending totals — capital budgets, procurement lines, or the output of the end market the product is bought against
  • Trade and customs flows, where the product crosses borders in a separately recorded form

Data sources

Published data establishes what happened. Only the people transacting in a market can say why, and what is about to change — so the two are collected separately and weighted differently.

Primary — who is interviewed
  • Commercial and product leadership at the companies that supply the market
  • Procurement and specification leads at the organisations that buy it
  • Distributors, integrators and channel partners, where the market is served indirectly
  • Regulatory and standards specialists, where approval governs what can be sold at all
Secondary — what is read
  • Company filings, annual reports and investor disclosure
  • Government statistics, customs records and regulatory registers
  • Trade association output and standards-body publications
  • Technical and peer-reviewed literature, where the market rests on a clinical or engineering claim
Primary research design, this report

Primary outreach targets the roles that specify and buy conveyor equipment rather than end users of the finished line: plant and facilities engineering managers, procurement and capital equipment purchasing managers at manufacturing and logistics operators, systems integrators who design multi-vendor lines, and equipment distributors who carry standard belt, roller and gravity conveyor as stock items. Regulatory and food-safety contacts are included for food and beverage and meat and poultry applications, where sanitary design and material approval affect specification. Sampling weights North America, Western Europe and East Asia, reflecting where manufacturing and distribution center construction is concentrated, with lighter coverage of Latin America and the Middle East and Africa, where installation volumes are smaller and more project-driven.

Secondary sources, this report

Desk research draws on HS code 8428 customs and trade data for cross-border shipment volumes, published segment revenue and order intake from Daifuku, Siemens, TGW Logistics Group and KION Group's Dematic business, and technical and shipment benchmarks published by the Conveyor Equipment Manufacturers Association. Food and beverage and meat and poultry demand is checked against FDA and USDA equipment material and sanitary design registrations, since conveyor belting sold into those applications must meet documented material standards. National industrial production indices, including the ISM manufacturing index and Eurostat industrial production data, are used to align regional demand timing with underlying manufacturing output.

Desk research runs across proprietary research databases including Factiva, OneSource and Hoovers alongside the public sources above. Modelling and statistical validation are run in SAS and SPSS.

Forecasting

The forecast is not a growth rate applied to a base year. It is built from the drivers that are expected to change, each one stated so a reader can disagree with it.

Forecast approach, this report

The forecast is built from planned warehouse and fulfillment center construction, manufacturing capacity expansion in automotive, food and beverage, and aerospace, and the ten-to-fifteen-year replacement cycle of installed conveyor equipment. The 2020 and 2021 historical years are treated as a capital expenditure pause, with the following catch-up investment normalized into the 2022-2023 growth rate rather than carried forward. The forecast assumes warehouse and distribution center construction continues at broadly its current pace and that manufacturers keep substituting powered and automated sections for manual and gravity handling; a sustained pull-back in either would lower the outer forecast years.

Triangulation and validation

No figure enters a report on the strength of one source. Where the two sizing routes disagree the difference is not averaged away — the assumption causing it is isolated, tested against a third independent measure, and either corrected or carried forward as a stated limitation. Historical years are back-tested against the growth actually recorded before any forecast is allowed to run forward from them.

Validation, this report

Outputs are back-tested against recorded 2020-2024 growth in industrial equipment shipments and manufacturing capital expenditure to confirm the historical build tracks actual conditions rather than a smoothed trend. Segment share shifts across type, application and load capacity are reviewed against engineering and procurement contacts for directional plausibility rather than taken as given. Two sensitivities are tested against the base case: a slower automation-adoption path, in which powered and automated conveyor sections gain share more gradually, and a faster warehouse-construction path, in which fulfillment center build-out continues above its recent pace; these define the bear and bull scenarios respectively.

Confidence and limitations

Where an estimate is firm and where it is not is stated rather than left to be inferred from the precision of the number.

Confidence framing, this report

Confidence is firmest on the type and load capacity splits, where unit shipment volumes and per-meter pricing benchmarks are direct and cross-checked against trade data. It is softer on the automation level and component splits, where adoption is self-reported by systems integrators and installers rather than captured in a standard trade classification. The clearest risk to the forecast is a slowdown in warehouse and fulfillment center construction or a pause in manufacturing capacity expansion across Asia Pacific, either of which would compress the outer forecast years faster than the historical replacement cycle alone would suggest.
