Methodology

How the estimates were built: data sources, modelling approach and validation steps.

Research approach

A market size is a claim about the world, and a claim is only as good as the route to it. Every study is built upward from units and prices — what is actually produced, sold or performed, at what it actually changes hands for — rather than from a headline figure divided downwards. Disclosed company revenue is then used to check that build, not to produce it.

Market size estimation, this report

Build upward from production and shipment volumes (metric tons of paint and coating output by resin type and region) and realized average selling prices per liter or kilogram across decorative and industrial end uses. Volume estimates draw from resin and pigment consumption data, notably titanium dioxide offtake as a proxy for coatings output, and national paint-industry association shipment figures, converted to revenue using blended price points that vary by technology and application. This bottom-up build is then checked against disclosed revenue and volume figures from the major listed producers named in this report; where a producer's reported regional revenue implies a different volume or price than the bottom-up assumption, the unit-price or volume assumption for that region is corrected rather than averaging the two figures together.

The four stages

The same sequence runs behind every published study, whatever the industry. The order matters as much as the steps: the segment axes are fixed before any number is collected, so the model is never reshaped to fit whatever data happens to turn up.

What the build rests on, and what checks it

The two are not interchangeable. The left column produces the number; the right column tests it. When the check disagrees with the build, the answer is to find which bottom-up assumption is wrong — a unit count, a price, a take-up rate — not to split the difference between them.

The bottom-up build rests on
  • Volume actually transacted — units produced, installed, dispensed or procedures performed, counted at the level each is genuinely recorded
  • Realised pricing by tier and channel, rather than one blended average applied across the whole market
  • Take-up and frequency: how much of the addressable base buys, and how often it repeats
The build is checked against
  • Disclosed revenue of the companies serving the market, where filings separate it far enough to be usable
  • Buyer-side spending totals — capital budgets, procurement lines, or the output of the end market the product is bought against
  • Trade and customs flows, where the product crosses borders in a separately recorded form

Data sources

Published data establishes what happened. Only the people transacting in a market can say why, and what is about to change — so the two are collected separately and weighted differently.

Primary — who is interviewed
  • Commercial and product leadership at the companies that supply the market
  • Procurement and specification leads at the organisations that buy it
  • Distributors, integrators and channel partners, where the market is served indirectly
  • Regulatory and standards specialists, where approval governs what can be sold at all
Secondary — what is read
  • Company filings, annual reports and investor disclosure
  • Government statistics, customs records and regulatory registers
  • Trade association output and standards-body publications
  • Technical and peer-reviewed literature, where the market rests on a clinical or engineering claim
Primary research design, this report

Interviews target commercial and sales leaders at paint and resin manufacturers, procurement heads at automotive OEM and industrial equipment buyers who specify coating systems, distributors and dealer-network operators who set retail and trade pricing, and regulatory affairs staff tracking VOC and emissions compliance timelines in each region. Sampling weights toward North America, Europe and East Asia, where the largest producers are headquartered and where regulatory change moves fastest, with a smaller but deliberate sample from Middle Eastern and Latin American procurement contacts to capture regional pricing and channel structure that differs from the mature markets. Findings are used to sense-check volume, price and channel assumptions built from disclosed data, not to substitute for it.

Secondary sources, this report

Desk research draws on titanium dioxide and resin trade and consumption data, national paint and coatings trade-association shipment statistics, customs trade-code data for coatings and resin imports and exports, and disclosed segment revenue from the publicly listed producers named in this report. Regulatory tracking uses published VOC content limits and low-emission coating standards from environmental regulators in North America, the European Union and China, since these schedules directly shape the waterborne-versus-solvent mix built into the forecast. Construction-sector output data from national statistics agencies anchors the architectural-coatings share, the largest single application in this market.

Desk research runs across proprietary research databases including Factiva, OneSource and Hoovers alongside the public sources above. Modelling and statistical validation are run in SAS and SPSS.

Forecasting

The forecast is not a growth rate applied to a base year. It is built from the drivers that are expected to change, each one stated so a reader can disagree with it.

Forecast approach, this report

The forecast is built from projected construction starts and renovation activity in major economies, automotive production and vehicle-parc growth feeding refinish demand, and the pace at which solvent-borne volume continues shifting to waterborne and powder systems under tightening emissions rules. Average selling prices are held broadly flat in real terms except where a technology shift changes the underlying formulation cost, such as the premium carried by polyurethane systems in protective and marine applications. The estimated year absorbs raw-material cost swings from the surrounding years into a normalized base instead of carrying them forward unchanged. The forecast holds if construction and automotive output grow in line with current consensus expectations.

Triangulation and validation

No figure enters a report on the strength of one source. Where the two sizing routes disagree the difference is not averaged away — the assumption causing it is isolated, tested against a third independent measure, and either corrected or carried forward as a stated limitation. Historical years are back-tested against the growth actually recorded before any forecast is allowed to run forward from them.

Validation, this report

Historical 2020-2024 volumes and prices are back-tested against recorded construction output and automotive production data for the same years to confirm the bottom-up build reproduces known market movements before it is extended forward. Segment share shifts, particularly the waterborne share gain and the polyurethane share gain, are reviewed against the regulatory and specification changes that would have to occur for them to hold at the modeled pace. Sensitivities are tested on the two inputs the forecast is most exposed to: construction-sector growth in Asia Pacific and titanium dioxide and resin input costs, since both move coating volume and price independently of underlying demand.

Confidence and limitations

Where an estimate is firm and where it is not is stated rather than left to be inferred from the precision of the number.

Confidence framing, this report

Confidence is firmest in the architectural and automotive OEM segments, where production and construction data are timely and the largest producers disclose regional revenue in enough detail to check the bottom-up build directly. It is weaker in protective, marine and coil coatings, where volumes are reported less consistently across regions and much of the supply runs through smaller regional and private formulators with no public disclosure. A structural risk to the estimate is a faster or slower pace of solvent-to-waterborne conversion than assumed; either would shift revenue between technology lines without necessarily changing the market's overall size.
